Subject: For the love of our beautiful homeland

Mr. Edgerton,

Since entering college, I have been on the prowl for anything and everything I can find on American Civil War era historical knowledge to satisfy the bizarre conundrum of my daily life experiences compared with what textbooks and the media present to us as the truth of our past. I’ve read books, attended lectures, visited historical sites, and even done a little reenacting of my own. Recent searching on the internet has led me to you.

You, sir, confound and perplex me. Learning of your past as an NAACP president and your present as a Confederate history advocate has given me more questions than answers. I know you’re a busy man, and there’s probably a thousand other more productive things you could be doing with your time, but…

May I please ask you some questions? I’d be really grateful for your response.

Thank you for your consideration,

Lydia Mudd
