On April 26, 2016, Florida’s Confederate Memorial Day, subscribers and members of the disbanded “War Between the States” (WBTS) theater subcommittee of Hillsborough County Veterans Park (the Park)
have filed a lawsuit against the County to stop the Park from proceeding with an alternative memorial design for the WBTS Theater. The Park had previously approved a memorial designed by a diverse
group of citizens very knowledgeable of local history. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 22, 2013.

After approval of the Theater’s Memorial design, fundraising having commenced with thousands of dollars raised for the design, and the groundbreaking ceremony already conducted, the Executive
Committee of the Park abruptly halted further efforts by the “War Between the States” subcommittee, disbanded it and concocted another design. These actions outraged local citizens, taxpayers and
subscribers to the WBTS Theater. When questioned by many concerned taxpayers and citizens about this “Bait & Switch” by this well planned action that was not conducted in the Sunshine but behind
closed doors, the Executive Committee’s response has been both secretive and less than earnest & honest. Reluctantly, the members of the dismissed WBTS subcommittee voted to sue in order to restore
the original design rather than a “cloaked replacement.”

“We feel politics has entered into this solemn effort to accurately and honestly memorialize these American Veterans,” said past WBTS subcommittee member Phil Walters. “This subcommittee was
very diverse & knowledgeable, and had worked diligently on this project, donating hundreds of hours of time, all to be abruptly “dumped,” without any plausible explanation. Very sad and not good
for community relations” he added.

Noted Black Confederate HK Edgerton to speak at Tampa’s Confederate Memorial Park at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 30. Link to info at
