On Friday, September 7, 2018, as I stood with the Southern Cross posted at the old historic Henderson County Courthouse in downtown Hendersonville, North Carolina; ironically, the first twenty mile trek on the Historic March Across Dixie, I would make a telephone call to the Clemson University police inquiring as to where the free speech zone was located on campus.
And of my intent to post the Southern Cross there while don in the Confederate soldier’s uniform to express my displeasure of the undergraduate Senate’s resolution to ban public display of it on campus and in the campus community, they would tell me that they did not have the answer, and directed me to a number on campus that would know. I would be given another number: (864) 656-4636, and told that the man who could answer my inquiry was in a twenty minute meeting and would return my call. He never did. And, I have now concluded that I might have to make a free speech zone when I visit the campus.
On Monday, September 10, 2018, I would ask the Chief Trial Counselor of the Southern Legal Resource Center, the Honorable Attorney Kirk D. Lyons, about this resolution. Attorney Lyons said that to the best of his thinking the resolution carried no weight, because this body could not impose University policy.
It appears to me that many of these students have visited the Southern Poverty Law Center’s website that purports to tell them what to say when they define their feelings about the Confederate flag and Cenotaphs in voicing their opposition to them. And, not to forget, just how low these students moral fibre sank when they reached out to an Iranian operative to define her displeasure of the Southern Cross. (“It means a battle or something like that,” she said.)
This just shows how low down these people are after the photoshopped picture of Dylan Roof led Nikki Haley to usher in this carnage against Southern symbols and the memories of our honorable fallen dead and the legal act of secession they took as described in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and in the compact forged.
In the South, we don’t want our culture and communities changed to the proposed decadence on the table. This body owes the Southern people an apology. The same red, yellow, black, white and brown who they come to divide with their rhetoric. We’ve seen it before (reconstruction)!
These students don’t get it; flying our flag is a Southern thing we do to uplift the spirits of our people, especially when it comes under attack. I go to tell them to make no mistake. That flag belongs to Southern people. It is a fact of history. And for those who hate us, I make the declaration that it will always fly in the Southland of America, and that the time has drawn near that we will no longer tolerate the Isis like destruction of the Cenotaphs of our fallen dead, or the cultural genocide that is proposed by this body.
I only await the end of Hurricane Florence to deliver this message. The same message that I shall deliver in Memphis, Tennessee on September 21, 2018 and September 22, 2018, to the Yankee born Mayor there who would defy the rule of law set down by the State Legislature, and its Historic Commission whose duty was to carry out that law.
