Dear Ms. Lunelle,

While the Honorable Attorney, Kirk D. Lyons, was my mom’s (the only black woman from Anderson, South Carolina to receive a Confederate State Funeral) favorite speaker, she was so very proud of the Honorable Jack Marlar, former Field Representative of the National Sons of Confederate Veterans, who also hailed from the great state of South Carolina.

It was Mr. Marlar who gave her a copy of a book written about the blacks from South Carolina who served in the Confederate military, and the many who provided support services to it. And those who received pensions for that service. And, not to forget, the many who declined those pensions because of their distrust of the Government headed up by scalawags and carpetbaggers, choosing to return home with their masters and not worrying about their well being because they were with him.

I mention this because of the enclosed article, which causes me to wish for two things…. (1) I wish I had a copy of this book to send to those uninformed blacks from Pendleton, South Carolina who, evidently, like so many educated in the public school system, have had inculcated in their thinking processes a history contrived to dismiss the place of honor that the African people who not only served in the Confederate military, but also the support they gave to it from back home. A history that is constantly subjugated to dismissal of the place of honor they earned because of their service.

And, (2)…. I would love to visit this school in Pendleton to tell my babies about this place of honor earned by the Africans, freed or indentured, from not only South Carolina, but also from all across the South. At the very least, maybe during so called Black History Month, I will post the Southern Cross outside Pendleton High. I know that my mom and Mr. Jack Marlar and a host of others would be proud because of it. God bless you!

Your brother,
