New Year’s Day Angels
Dear Ms. Lunelle,
On Tuesday morning, January 1, 2019, as I stood don in the uniform of the Southern soldier with the Southern Cross in hand, after about an hour contemplating on furling my flag because there were not many people on the road on this New Year’s morning, when suddenly a car would park.
A middle aged couple with two teenagers and a young boy who looked about nine or ten years old came to where I stood, and asked if they could take a picture with me.
After about five or six pictures, they wished me Happy New Year, and turned jubilantly walking away. The baby boy turned quickly and ran back to me. He hugged me and handed me a bag of chips that was almost empty, and turned to his mom and asked her if he could have a dollar? He looked at his dad with his hands outstretched never saying a word.
Before his dad could respond, he turned to his brother and sister. And they in turn began rummaging through their pockets, each handing him a dollar. He collected his bounty from his parents, and handed it to me.
“Please don’t cry,” he said to me. I didn’t realize that I had teared up. “My mom said that you were fighting for my great, great, great, great, great grandfather and the people of the South. I just hope this will help you to fight. All of a sudden, we were all crying.
As they pulled away, all waving from the car, the only thing I could think to say was…. “God bless you, Happy New Year!”
When I reached to put what I thought was about five one dollar bills into my bill folder that I could use in my gas tank, to my utter surprise there was among the dollars a one hundred dollar bill. More tears would form in my eyes. I had also been contemplating if I had some gas, instead of furling my flag and going home, I could carry my message further down the road.
I would head for home some four hour hours late, never to forget the angels that I met on New Years morning 2019.
God bless you! And here is wishing you and everyone a happy and prosperous New Year.
Your brother,
