Graveside service honors local Confederate

By T.S. HORNE

The North Carolina Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans honored Civil War veteran Jonathan Horton Doughton with a graveside memorial service last Saturday at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. According to the SCV, Doughton’s company held the 13th Tennessee U.S. forces and Kirk’s Raiders and other of Stoneman’s forces at bay during action. A captain for the Confederacy, Doughton lost a thumb in the second battle at Manassas and returned home to lead the Alleghany Home Guard for the remainder of the Civil War. He was the father of Lt. Gov. Rufus Doughton and Congressman Bob Doughton.
