(AP) — Gov. Sonny Perdue has signed a bill designating April as Confederate Heritage and History Month in Georgia.

The new designation is designed to boost tourism at the state’s Civil War battle sites.  Governments, schools, businesses and Georgia residents would be encouraged to participate in programs throughout the month celebrating the Confederate States of America.

Perdue signed the bill into law Wednesday at the state Capitol.
