City board to decide whether to honor Confederates

Associated Press – June 8, 2009

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) – The city attorney of Jonesborough is expected to present a legal opinion on whether to allow the names of Confederate soldiers to be placed on veterans memorial.

For several years, the town has been placing bricks honoring soldiers of the U.S. military in the Veterans Memorial Park.

Mayor Kelly Wolfe told the Johnson City Press that the town has no desire to unfairly discriminate against anyone. City attorney Jim Wheeler will speak to the board of mayor and aldermen on Monday evening about the issue.

The mayor has received requests from a couple of organizations asking the city to also allow the recognition of Confederate soldiers along with Union soldiers who are honored on the site.
