Statue to honor Civil War hero

June 10, 2009

MIDDLETOWN — The Town Council is considering a request by the Garland-Rodes camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans to build a monument in town honoring Confederate Gen. Jubal A. Early.

The monument is proposed to be sculpted by Gary Casteel of Lexington, with a tentative location at a future residential development at U.S. 11 and Sixth Street.

The monument would take about a year and a half to complete, Casteel said. Its final design will depend on the outcome of a fundraiser underway by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, but Casteel indicated the monument likely would be a life-size re-creation of the general.

The monument is proposed to be installed on a 2-acre open space at the "Adams property" development, which would bring 101 homes to 26 acres at its completion. The town has not committed to the location.

The project would be fully funded by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. No timeline has been set for the monument’s completion.
