The End of Free Speech on the Horizon?

Thursday, January 4th 2007

The word on the street and across the internet is that the Democrats want to try
and reintroduce federal hate crimes legislation. Recall that in my previous post
about the 14th Amendment I noted that many harmful laws have been passed by disguising
them as "good" or "noble". The proposed federal hate crimes
law is just another example of this.

Most Americans, myself included do not want to see anyone harmed for who they
are or how they live their lives. But why do we need "hate crime"
laws? If someone harms a fellow citizen isn’t there already laws on the books
to deal with this situation? If someone steals from or robs another citizen
are there not already laws on the book to deal with this situation?

When you get down to the facts of the matter, any crime perpetrated against
another is a "hate crime". Anyone who would committ a crime that harms
another "hates" the rule of law. Anyone who harms another (with the
exception of self-defense) automatically hates that individual, no matter the
race , creed or color of either party involved.

So why pass a "hate crimes" bill?

They want to pass a "hate crimes" bill because it is "feel good"
legislation for liberals. It has been portrayed as "good" to the public,
yet if passed will once again broaden government powers, and limit our rights.
Specifically our 1’st Amendment rights.

In an article found at rense.com the Reverand Ted Pike details the dangers
of this proposed legislation that could be introduced as early as this week.

"With Congress back in session on January 3, the federal "hate crimes"
bill could be reintroduced any time. The Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith
introduced the same legislation last January 6, three days after Congress convened.

This is the most dangerous legislation ever to come before Congress. It leads
directly to an end of free speech. Once free speech is gone, there is little
to prevent the loss of all our other freedoms. The new Democrat-controlled Congress
has all the votes it needs to quickly run this Orwellian bill through committee
in the House and Senate and pass it. Unless they lose their nerve, thrown back
by massive protest from the American people.

Extraordinary action must be taken NOW to back down ADL and intimidate them
from even introducing the hate bill in this session.
Your Voice Will Make the Difference"

Also included in Reverand Pike’s article is a website link that you can go to
and print off an educational flyer about "hate crimes" legislation
as well as the telephone number for the U.S. Capitol Hotline so that you can
find your Representative and Senators. The link to the flyer and the Capitol
Hill toll free number are listed below:

A third option is to visit www.congress.org . At this website you can type
in your zip code and a list of your elected officials will appear. You can then
utilize contact information off this site that you can use to send a letter,
email or call them. Below is the letter that I sent from Congress.Org to Senator
Claire McCaskill:

To:
Sen. Claire McCaskill

January 3, 2007

Dear Senator McCaskill,

I supported you throughout the 2006 campaign. Though many questioned your promise
to be bi-partisan, or that you would keep your word on immigration reform, I
am pleased to see that you have co-sponsored a bill for massive immigration
reform. It was apparent that Jim Talent was for immigration reform at the border,
but cared nothing about it within the corporate workforce of our own state’s
borders.

I am writing to ask you to once again act in a bi-partisan manner regarding
the proposed Federal Hate Crimes Legislation. One article that I have read stated
that:

"This is the most dangerous legislation ever to come before Congress.
It leads directly to an end of free speech. Once free speech is gone, there
is little to prevent the loss of all our other freedoms"

Free Speech is guaranteed to us by the 1’st Amendment to the Constitution.
No one ever said that it should be nice, pretty or politically correct, but
our protected right to free speech has set our nation apart from the rest of
the world.

Right now in Europe, individuals have been and continue to be jailed because
of this type of legislation. Many of them have been jailed because of beliefs
that I do not personally agree with. I do however believe that everyone should
have the right to express their opinions without being jailed for doing so.

To pass this legislation would make us no different from Europe, or third world
countries ruled by iron fisted dictators.

Please vote against this proposed legislation, so that our right to free speech
remains protected.

Sincerely,

Clint E. Lacy
