16, 2007, Gainesville Kiwanis Club, Civic Center 12noon. Speaker: Former Georgia
Secretary of State, Abit Massey, arranged through your SCV committee. The club
is one of the largest Kiwanis Clubs in Georgia. Media and 150 to 2oo will attend.4. We in SCV will celebrate 2007 as the 200th Birthday of Confederate General
Robert E. Lee. I am on the Georgia Committee appointed by Ga. Division Commander
Lott. The South Georgia R.E. Lee Birthday celebration will be held Saturday
Jan.13, 2007 at the Confederate Memorial Park at Albany Georgia on Hwy. 91 North
(Philema Rd.). Everyone is invited to attend–SCV–UDC and public. Activities
begin at 10:00 AM with speakers at 2PM–Pastor John Weaver-Former Ga. Div. Cmdr.
Jack Bridwell and Allison Perry past Ga. 6th Brigade Cmdr. Period music will
be performed live following the speaking and a BBQ will be held. A Confederate
encampment with reenactors will be on display, along with 1 of 3 traveling Confederate
artillery forges. A spinning demonstration will be there for the ladies. Numerous
infantry, cavalry, and artillery reenactors will be present and firing when
appropriate.I am in the process of preparing a feature full page article in the Albany
Herald newspaper which will be printed in the South View section. I am forwarding

I encourage all SCV camps and UDC chapters to arrange to have articles printed

Albany, Georgia5. Parade commemorating the 200th birthday of General Robert E. Lee is set for
Saturday January 20 in Montgomery, Alabama. The parade will commence at 12 noon
from the fountain area and proceed up Dexter Ave. to the capitol. There will
be a program in the capitol auditorium at 1:00 PM. We may be blessed with Alabama
Governor Riley being present. The parade will include a Robert E. Lee impersonator.

area. Period attire is encouraged but not required. Plan to be part of this

Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV)The evening’s presentation will highlight the life and career of this great
American soldier from his graduation from West Point Military Academy in 1829,
early life in the US Army and service in the war with Mexico, appointment as
Superintendent of West Point in 1852, devotion to family, home and State that
led him to resign his commission in order to defend Virginia, and subsequent
service as commander of Confederate forces that regularly fought outnumbered
by 3 to 1 odds. After the war Lee was appointed as the President of Washington
College, later renamed Washington and Lee. He died on October 12th, 1870, with
his last words being "strike the tent." He was 63 years of age. A
newspaper report in Wilmington on October 13, 1870 was representative of North
Carolinians’ reaction: "The intelligence of General Lee’s death created
a profound sensation in this community, and recalls vividly to mind many associations
connected with his visit here in April last. Today, flags on the shipping were
generally at half-mast, also on the British and Danish Consulate.The annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce adjourned today out of respect
to the memory of the dead hero, and they appointed a committee to make arrangements
for the suspension of business and the tolling of bells on the day of the funeral,
and for a public meeting of the citizens to take suitable action in the matter.
The universal feeling among all classes and parties here is that a great and
good man has fallen." Lee visited Wilmington during his 1870 tour of the
South and reviewed the cadets of the Cape Fear Academy before being feted with
a memorial supper at the residence of George Davis, former Attorney General

My camp 1642 in Cumming, Georgia is having two events: We are sponsoring a
county-wide school essay contest with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place cash awards, in
cooperation with the County school board on "Robert E. Lee’s Life Principles:
Wellspring of Leadership." Also on March 31, 2007, at 8:00PM, we are having
noted Robert E. Lee impersonator, Dick Crozier at the Cumming Playhouse here
in the Historic School for a live performance; in addition, he will award the
essay prizes and have photo op with the students. Both of these events will

I have set up a 200th Lee birthday celebration in Albany at the Confederate
memorial park. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend this event.
I will be advertising full page in the Lee Ledger and am having some posters
printed to place in area store fronts. Will also be contacting Lee Co Middle
and high schools. Have gotten Al Perry, Commander Bridwell and Pastor Weaver
as speakers. Work began on this in August. Have the 4th Ga, 29th Ga Co K, Sumter
Flying Artillery, 2nd Georgia Artillery and am working on getting a naval unit
there. Facilities will be provided and am trying to get a vendor for ladies
wares to commit also. Have Gotten Lee county Camp to prepare the BBQ and furnish
chairs and tables. If you feel the need to march with a flag, no one will criticize
you for it, and you are welcome to, as long as it is a Confederate one. Johnny
Pate from Stewart Webster camp will have a historical and recruitment booth
also. Lynn Belcher will be there with a traveling artillery forge doing demonstrations
also. Members of the Lee Guards camp will be performing period music and am
trying to get another group as we speak President of the C of C will also attend.
No Georgia Division funds are being spent, so there will be no bean counting

"Year of Lee" Proclamation approved Men of the Herald,Yesterday at the Lenoir County Commissioners meeting, members of three local
Sons of Confederate Veterans camps were represented as we proposed our proclamation
to have all of 2007 be known as the "Year of Lee."After a 10 minute presentation, I am proud to report that the Commissioners,
without pause, unanimously approved our request.We are making plans for quarterly history forums next year, as well as regular
articles in the local internet and print media to educate folks about the greatness
of Robert Edward Lee. We hope to accomplish this in a joint effort with local
SCV camps, our CSS Neuse Foundation, and the OCR.We hope this endeavor will be a success Confederation-wide before the country
jumps into high gear to celebrate the bicentennial of lincoln’s birth in 2009.
I understand nearly 100 million dollars has been put forth so far in preparation
for his remembrance. Let us collectively demonstrate once again that principle

2007 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Robert E. Lee, one of America’s
most revered individuals. But opinions are changing in this era of Political
Correctness. Was Lee a hero whose valor and leadership were surpassed only by
his honor and humanity? Or was he a traitor whose military skill served a bad
cause and prolonged an immoral rebellion against his rightful government?The Stephen D. Lee Institute will explore these questions and Lee’s incomparable
legacy in a Bicentennial Symposium on Saturday, April 28, 2007, in Arlington,
Virginia, where Lee lived until he departed to join the Confederacy and later

will feature two new exhibits on Robert E. Lee: "Capturing Robert E. Lee
in Life and Memory" and "Robert E. Lee and the Women in his Life."
Robert E. Lee portrayer Al Stone will give two presentations in the Visitor
Center, at
11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., on Lee’s Decision to resign from the U. S. Army. Light
refreshments will be served throughout the day in the Visitor Center.Two artillery salutes to Lee, using full-scale cannons, will be held during
the late afternoon and early evening.From 6:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., candlelight tours of the Great House, featuring
live musicians in the Great Hall, will be held. The admission fee to the above
activities is $12 for adults (ages 12 and up), $6 for children (ages 5-11),
and children under 5 free. Visitors planning to enjoy these activities only
can pay the admission fee at the gate. The Plantation Dining Room will be open
