Vandalism reward raised

Monday, Nov. 30, 2009An award for information on the vandal who defaced the
Confederate monument on Broad Street this month has been increased.
In an e-mail, Lee Herron, the Sons of Confederate Veterans commander of B/G E. Porter Alexander #158, said the award is now $1,350 for information leading to the arrest of the vandal. It had been $1,000.
On Nov. 8, someone spray-painted anti-white messages on the monument. Messages were marked in black and include the words "black power," "I hate whites" and "cracker killers" in addition to an obscenity against whites in large letters.
Mr. Herron said the additional donation came from Sgt. Berry Benson Camp #1672, Sons of Confederate Veterans group of North Augusta, which bears the name of the soldier represented on top of the Confederate monument.
