Dear Friends of the South, (oops, The attachments are here now.)

This weeks article will be of special interest to those who believe that the U.S. federal government has assumed too much power in and over the lives of its citizens. The article is written by Dr. Clyde N. Wilson on the Constitution of the United States as it pertains to the States and is focused on nullification of federal law by individual States. It is necessary to maintain the ability of the State to nullify federal law in order to maintain any degree of religious liberty against secularised centralised governments.

Clyde N. Wilson (born 1941) retired as a Distinguished Professor of History from the University of South Carolina. He is a paleoconservative political commentator and a long-time contributing editor for Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture and Southern Partisan magazine which focuses on the cultures of the Southern States, and an occasional contributor to the National Review. Wilson is best known for his expertise on the life and writings of John C. Calhoun, having recently compiled his papers in volumes ten through twenty-eight of the twenty-eight volumes. Scholarly reviewers are unanimous in their high praise for the Calhoun Papers for meticulous editorial work, and his insightful historical introductions. The term "exemplary" is often applied. Wilson’s work on Calhoun draws comments like "shows high ability in the field of intellectual history" (Journal of American History), "plows new ground by the acre" (Virginia Magazine of History & Biography), and many others of similar import. He is the M.E. Bradford Distinguished Chair of the Abbeville Institute, and an adjunct faculty member of the libertarian Ludwig von Mises Institute.

During 38 years at the University of South Carolina, Wilson taught a wide variety of courses and directed many doctoral dissertations, four of which quickly became books.

Wilson early earned the reputation as an intellectual heir of Richard M. Weaver, M. E. Bradford and the Southern Agrarians. In 1980 he assisted Thomas Fleming in founding the Southern Partisan magazine, and became a contributing editor of Chronicles when Fleming became editor of that journal. In 1981, Wilson brought together the book "Why the South Will Survive, by Fifteen Southerners," an updated statement of the Agrarian message of "I’ll Take My Stand" on its 50th anniversary. The volume included contributions by Cleanth Brooks, Andrew Lytle, George Garrett, and other well known literati.

Through this Institute Dr. Clyde N. Wilson is making available for purchase a large number of books from his own professional library. Wilson retired about 18 months ago and is selling some of the books from his office library. Many of these works are rare “1st Editions” and nearly all are signed by him: “Ex Libris, Clyde N. Wilson.” In a few copies of his own Defending Dixie he has autographed also with “Deo Vindice” and his own From Union to Empire: Essays in the Jeffersonian Tradition he has autographed with “Sic Semper Tyrannic.” These rare remaining copies are also for sale. The list of Wilson’s available books are listed on the second attachment to this email. They may be ordered by emailing me your name and complete mailing address. Most books require $4.50 for shipping.

Sincerely,
