Press Release: April 26 Ceremony Commemorates Confederate Memorial Day on Dixie County Courthouse Steps

Cross City, Florida

Commencing at Noon on Monday, the Dixie Defenders Camp #2086, Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) will be conducting a Memorial service in Honor of Confederate Memorial Day upon the steps of the Dixie County Courthouse in Cross City. The service will be adjacent to the granite monument of the Ten Commandments. Featured speakers will include Commander Bob Hearst of the Florida Division, SCV and Tampa community activist & Southern Heritage defender Al McCray. Mr. McCray will be recording the event for Internet broadcast for  “The Al McCray Show.” The public is invited to attend this event to our veterans.

Guest speaker Al McCray of the General Jubal A. Early camp, #556, SCV will provide an insightful view on this state holiday

Monday, April 26th, is Confederate Memorial Day in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Kansas and Mississippi.

The Constitution of the Confederates States of America will be exhibited from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm on Monday, April, 26, 2010, in the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library (on the 3rd floor of the Main Library) at the University of Georgia, in Athens. Also, on display will be War Between the States letters, documents artifacts and images.

The Confederate History Month Committee of the Sons of Confederate Veterans encourages everyone to make it a family affair in attending Confederate Memorial Day activities throughout the USA and teaching your children about the role the men and women of the Southern Confederacy played in our nation’s history. Confederate Memorial Day has been a legal holiday in Georgia since 1874 by an act of the Georgia General Assembly and bill signed by then Governor James Smith, who also served as Confederate Colonel, Lawyer and Congressman.

For over 100 years, the members of the Ladies Memorial Association, United Daughters of the Confederacy and Sons of Confederate Veterans have kept the tradition of Confederate Memorial Day alive.

The Georgia General Assembly passed Senate Bill No. 27 in 2009 officially and permanently designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month and signed by Governor Sonny Perdue.

In 2010, the Governor’s of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Virginia signed proclamations designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.

Note: The Governor of Tennessee signed a proclamation recognizing June 3 as Confederate Decoration Day in Tennessee. This day is also Celebrated as Confederate Memorial Day in Kentucky and Louisiana – Chuck Rand
