Confederate flag near Mass. school: Yes or no?

May 27, 2010

At Walpole High School in Walpole, Massachusetts, the Confederate flag was the symbol of their sports teams for decades. The football team is still known as the Rebels. In 1994, the school board voted to adopt a new symbol rather than the flag, considered by many to stand for the Old South’s fight for slavery. But recently, a property owner next to the Massachusetts school erected the Confederate flag and that decision has split the community, reports CNN affiliate WHDH. "It’s just a symbol; there’s all kinds of symbols out there," resident Judy Feldman told WHDH. Resident Ara Nerssessian disagrees. "I think the flag is completely inappropriate. … It basically represents racism." What do you think? Should the property owner take down the divisive flag? Can the Confederate flag be used as a sports symbol or is any use of the flag racist?
