ANDERSON, S.C. —

How old do you have to be to have had a father who fought in the Civil War? James Brown and H.V. Booth know the answer. They’re among 32 surviving sons of confederate veterans.

"My father was born in 1841," Brown said.

"My daddy was born in 1847," said Booth.

The two men sat down together at the first national convention of the Sons of Confederate Veterans to be held in Anderson. Brown is 91, and lives in Elbert County, Ga. Booth is 98, and resides in Greene County, Tenn.

"My daddy was sick, Booth told Brown. "They sent him home on a mule from Andersonville up to Elbert County."

Andersonville, also known as Camp Sumter, was a military prison established by the Confederacy during the Civil War. It was located 500 miles from where Brown’s father served as a Confederate soldier.

"My father went in, and was 20," said Brown. "He stayed the whole length of the war, and wound up at Appomattox."

Brown’s father was 82 when he died. Booth’s was 87 years old. Both men lived long and healthy lives, according to their sons, who have kept their stories and memories alive.
