KAIT in Jonesboro reports extensively here to debunk a rumor that an order had come down to do away with Highland High School’s rebel mascot and to end the flying of Confederate flags at Highland games.

Highland graduates like Billy Yates who used to carry the flag at football games; were understandably up in arms.

"I don’t understand why all of a sudden this has come up. It’s been here since 1966 when the Rebels name got established and they adopted the Confederate flag."

[Superintendent James] Floyd, "There’s been no discussion about doing that. The administration or the board since I’ve been here has not mentioned that at all."

The KAIT report concludes:

So breathe easy Highland Rebel students and alumni. Everything’s cool.

Cool is a matter of perspective, I’d guess. Should flag-clad Rebel fans ever venture down from Cherokee Village to the Delta with banners waving, I think they might encounter a difference of opinion or three.
