LEXINGTON, Va. — The war over Confederate battle flags is heating up in Lexington.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans is planning a rally for Sept. 1. That’s the day the city will hold a public hearing and possible vote on a new ordinance that would ban anything other than U.S., Virginia or Lexington flags from being flown on downtown poles.

The fight has been brewing since the organization asked to fly three types of Confederate flags in January to celebrate Lee-Jackson Day, a state holiday. The city allowed the flags flown on some days, but not others.

Mayor Mimi Elrod tells WSLS-TV that the flag flap prompted the city council to come up with the regulation.

Local SCV commander Brandon Dorsey says he asked for a compromise, but the city wouldn’t budge.
