February 25, 2012RICHMOND, Va. — Civil War re-enactors and fans of the Confederacy have descended on Richmond for a rally and parade.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that several hundred Civil War re-enactors and others marched down Monument Avenue on Saturday during a so-called heritage rally organized by the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The parade stopped for a rally at the monument to Robert E. Lee as a small plane flew overhead with a banner reading "Richmond, Embrace Your Confederate History."
During the rally, speakers praised Lee and Jefferson Davis, and heaped scorn on Abraham Lincoln.
The rally and parade commemorates the establishment of the Confederate government in Richmond and the inauguration of Davis. He was inaugurated on Feb. 22, 1862, one year after he became provisional president.
