NC dispute over Confederate statue goes to court

REIDSVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A judge is expected to rule later this week on a request to block the United Daughters of the Confederacy from spending insurance money to create a new statue of a Confederate soldier in Reidsville.
Another Reidsville group, the Historic Preservation Action Committee, requested the injunction because it says the United Daughters of the Confederacy does not own an old statue that was knocked down in a downtown wreck last year.
The Reidsville’s city attorney said the statue belonged to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The Historic Preservation Action Committee contends the statue belongs to the state.
The United Daughters of the Confederacy wants the new statue put in a city-owned cemetery. The Historic Preservation Action Committee says the old statue can be repaired and put back downtown.
