Effort Underway To Locate, Identify Graves Of Confederate Soldiers
Search expected to be a five-year project

June 17, 2012The Pickens County Historical Society is involved in a project to find and properly identify the graves of Confederate Veterans and their wives.
PCHS President Ken Nabors said the project, headed up by Anne Sheriff of Southern Wesleyan University’s Faith Clayton Genealogy Room, is projected to take 5 years to complete.
The project is a joint effort of the PCHS, the Pendleton District Genealogical Society and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Nabors compared Sheriff to “a postman.”
“Rain, shine, cold – it don’t matter,” Nabors said. “We persevere, we’re going to meet, we’re going to search these cemeteries.
“She’s doing a grand job,” Nabors said. “We’re well on our way to documenting them.”
Nabors said the project will be a treasure trove of genealogical research and a way to honor the dead.
“They were part of our founding fathers – and your ancestors,” Nabors told attendees at the Pickens County Historical Society’s recent spring convocation. “So we’re going to find them all.
“And it’s not easy,” he continued. “Some of those cemeteries are kind of remote.”
The project could use additional volunteers.
“We have a good time,” he said. “Even though there’s critters crawling and all that this time of year, you just have to a little bit careful.”
