Lynchburg Repairs Monument Felled by Vehicle

September 16, 2012

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) – A Lynchburg monument honoring Confederate General Jubal Early has returned to its spot after a nearly yearlong absence.

The city took down the 10-ton obelisk last year after a vehicle hit it and cracked its base.

The damage has been repaired and city officials have taken steps to protect the monument from wayward vehicles.

The News and Advance says the city obtained permission from a neighboring landowner to move the obelisk back about 20 feet. That will provide a larger buffer from passing traffic.

City officials also plan to add protective bollards to the monument’s periphery.
