Va. celebrates Lee-Jackson Day

Published: January 18LEXINGTON, Va. — Virginia on Friday is marking Lee-Jackson Day, a state holiday dedicated to two towering figures in the Civil War.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans is hosting a symposium in Lexington, where Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson had strong ties and where both are buried. A flag vigil is also planned by the group.
The subject of flying Confederate flags remains a prickly subject in Lexington. City officials in 2011 banned the flying of Confederate flag and others on city-owned poles.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans protested that decision and decided to challenge the ban in court. Last June a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit. The Southern heritage group says the dispute is scheduled to be argued before a federal appeals court in March.
